Avon Walk for Breast Cancer 2009

The Pretty in Pink Ladies conquered their second Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this past weekend in Chicago. The Ladies included DuPage Medical Group (DMG) employees from Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology, and the Institute of Aesthetic Surgery. Not only did they walk the length of the marathon on Saturday, June 6th, but they continued to walk 13.1 miles further on Sunday. The walk began in a crowded Soldier Field and finished in Warren Park on day one of the two-day walk. The Ladies walked through Chicago landmarks such as the lake shore, Lincoln Wood, Lincoln Park, Sauganash, and the Village of Skokie. This adventure was experienced in the presence of friends and families that came together for a common goal. The prevention and cure of breast cancer grew a little closer to discovery this weekend when the Pretty in Pink Ladies raised over $20,000! The dedication and teamwork of these ladies was exemplified by their team total.

The fundraising hurdle was easily overcome with the help of these corporate sponsors. Special thanks to DMG, The Institute of Aesthetic Surgery, The Northstar Group, Inc., Radiesse, The Suburban Woman, DMH Surgical, Inc.-Walter Lorenz, Quasar Medical, Inc., and Leonblu. The Ladies also held specific fundraisers within the DMG community. The Ice Cream Social and Bake Sales were a complete success! Other fundraisers that contributed to our success were “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, a raffle of White Sox and Cubs tickets hosted at Highland Oaks Administrative Offices, a Silent Auction, and a dinner deal to BD Mongolian Grill.  Each individual member made an extraordinary effort to reach the $20,000 mark. The personal and joint fundraising of the team shows how determined the Pretty in Pink Ladies, and their corporate sponsors, are to finding a cure!

Although this was only the second walk for the Pretty in Pink Ladies, Chicago has hosted seven walks total! Ironically, this year for their seventh annual walk, the 3,200 walkers raised a total of 7 million dollars! The Avon Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity and looks to support advance access to care, and the cure for breast cancer. For information on the Avon Walk, visit www.avonwalk.org.  From just this walk, grants totaling over $2.4 million were given to Chicago land organizations. Some Chicago grants include The University of Chicago, Robert H. Lurie Cancer Center at Northwestern University and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Mercy Foundation, and others. The rest of the money will be awarded to breast cancer programs located across the nation throughout the next year. The money and advancements that resulted from the Avon Walk will save many lives in the near future, and the effort of the Pretty in Pink Ladies helped to make this possible.

DuPage Medical Group annually participates in Holiday Shoppe with Family Shelter Service

DuPage Medical Group annually participates in Holiday Shoppe with Family Shelter Service. In 2008, Holiday Shoppe benefited more than 270 women and 592 children. Donations of toys, gift certificates, hats, gloves, and mittens are provided to Family Shelter Service by the community which includes our DMG employees throughout all of our office locations. Those donations are displayed in a store-like setting, and clients are given the opportunity to choose special gifts for their families, at no charge. For many of these families this is the only opportunity to provide gifts for their children. Our DMG employees not only donate gifts, but volunteer to assist in setting up the Holiday Shoppe as well as assist clients as they shop for their families.

Family Shelter Service provides services for victims of domestic violence. They provide individual and group counseling, court advocacy and services, shelter, hotline, teen services, children's services, as well as programs conducted in Spanish. Please visit their website for more information to volunteer or to donate items - http://www.familyshelterservice.org/index.html

Dr. Edward Michl ran in support of "Team for Kids" in the New York City Marathon on November 2, 2008

Dr. Edward Michl, an Internist at DuPage Medical Group's location in Naperville at Edward Medical Physician Center participated in the support of "Team for Kids" by running in the New York City Marathon on November 2, 2008. Alongside Dr. Michl was his daughter, Lisa, who is a graduate student at Columbia University. DuPage Medical Group proudly sponsored Dr. Michl in this event.

Team for Kids in conjunction with New York Road Runners (NYRR) support youth fitness programs that improve health, combat obesity and enhance personal development of children from low-income communities.  For most of these kids, these programs are the only physical education they receive, in or out of school.  The model programs teach children the fundamentals of lifetime fitness, while increasing their self-discipline and self-esteem.  A nutrition curriculum is available to schools separately from the fitness program.  Since 2002, Team for Kids members have raised more than $8 million to fund NYRR Foundation programs now uplifting almost 50,000 children a week in more than 200 schools and community centers.
