A member of the Asthma and Allergy Center of DuPage Medical Group, Dr. Smart treats patients who range in age from early infancy to their nineties. His areas of clinical interest include asthma, food allergy, chronic sinusitis, and immunodeficiency disorders. Dr. Smart has significant pharmaceutical and scientific research experience, has been published extensively, and serves on editorial boards of important journals in his specialty. He has also been a speaker on a variety of asthma and allergy-related topics, both locally and nationally.
Dr. Smart received his medical degree in 1993 from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC. He completed his Residency in Pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and completed his Fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
Dr. Smart is very active in local and national allergy societies and is a Fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology; the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology; the Illinois Society of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (for which he is President from 2007-2008); and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is affiliated with Central DuPage, Edward and Good Samaritan Hospitals.
Dr. Smart is married and the father of small children. He is an accomplished endurance athlete and has finished numerous running, cycling, and swimming events, including multiple marathons and one Ironman triathlon.
