The National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA) is pleased to announce their 2008 National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day campaign, Caring by Sharing on May 12.
Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal aches, pain and stiffness, soft tissue tenderness, general fatigue, and sleep disturbances. It is estimated that approximately 3-6% of the U.S. population has FM. Although a higher percentage of women of all ages and races are affected, it does strike men and children. Because of its debilitating nature, fibromyalgia has a serious impact on patients’ families, friends, and employers, as well as society at large. For more information please see http://www.fmaware.org or discuss with your physician.

An Important Message from Our President and Vice President
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Leave a Comment
Cover the Uninsured week (CTUW) (April 27-May 8, 2008) may be coming to a close today, but the need for health care coverage continues. CTUW is a non-partisan campaign sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to raise the profile of the growing problem of the uninsured. As physicians who provide healthcare for people in DuPage, Will and Kane Counties, we would like to reflect on this problem and call your attention to proposed legislation that could help to promote health care access in communities across the country.
It is estimated that forty-seven million Americans, including more that nine million children, are living without health care coverage. In DuPage County alone there are approximately 38,000 people without health insurance. When people lack health insurance they frequently put off getting medical attention until they are much sicker and require more costly emergent treatment. And although the health care problems created by this scenario are considerable, this is not just a health care issue. The consequences to our society as a whole are immense including increasing rates of personal bankruptcy and lost worker productivity.
We are proud to be involved in the DuPage County initiative Access DuPage, now the DuPage Healthcare Coalition, that addresses the healthcare access problem for the working poor in DuPage County. Last year 9000 people received health care services through this organization that brings together healthcare providers, area hospitals as well as government, community and business leaders to develop systems of healthcare access throughout DuPage County for the uninsured.
We believe that this model of local public private partnership can be a powerful force in providing healthcare for the uninsured. That is why we support the legislation proposed by US Senator Patty Murray and US Representative Gene Green, the Community Coalitions for Access and Quality Improvement Act, S.2056/HR 3561, that provides funding for broad based community coalitions to work together to provide health care access for the uninsured.
We recognize that this is not the universal access solution we all seek. However we believe it is a good interim step that meets an immediate need. The principles of community collaboration that we learn from successful coalitions funded by the bill can be applied nationally to build high quality cost effective health care delivery systems for people in every community.
We urge everyone to learn more about the problem of the uninsured and the Community Coalitions bill and to write to your members of Congress asking them to co-sponsor this important legislation.

Is Your Child Up-to-Date on Immunizations?
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Comments Off
Before the busy summer months are upon us, be sure to check with your pediatrician or family doctor to make sure your children are immunized. Vaccinating your child is one of the most important things a parent can do for their child’s health as well as the health of the entire community. Vaccines save lives and protect against the spread of disease. If you decide not to immunize your child, you put your child and other children around him or her at risk. Your child could catch a disease and getting vaccinated is much safer than getting the disease.
At DuPage Medical Group, we understand how important your child’s health is to you. That’s why we believe it is critical for parents to get the facts about vaccines as you make this decision. Your child’s physician is the best resource for immunization information. Find a DuPage Medical Group Pediatrician or Family Physician. The websites listed below also have credible vaccine information.

Now Is the Time to Schedule School, Sports, and Camp Physicals
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Leave a Comment
It’s a great time to schedule school grade physicals, annual sports, and camp physicals. School-aged children are required to have a physical for those entering Kindergarten, 6th Grade, and 9th Grade. The General Assembly passed a bill that changed a portion of the student’s health exam requirement. Sixth Grade Physical exams are now required. The 6th Grade Physical replaces the 5th Grade physical requirement. Read more about the 6th Grade Physical Exam Requirement at the Illinois Association of School Administrators website.
DuPage Medical Group’s Pediatricians would like to remind you that well child visits are recommended annually for ages 3 and up. Call your child’s physician now to schedule an appointment before the busy summer months begin!
