Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Leave a Comment
Rik Baier, Chief Operations Officer of DuPage Medical Group spoke to the Glen Ellyn Rotary Club at Barones Restaurant in Glen Ellyn. Mr. Baier presented information on the final stages of construction of the new medical facility located 430 Pennsylvania in Glen Ellyn.
The new facility will replace the current medical building located at 454 Pennsylvania, which has been servicing the health and medical needs of Glen Ellyn and surrounding communities for over 40 years. The new medical facility will be completed the beginning of March 2008. Once all medical departments have moved to the new building, demolition to the old building will begin with an estimated completion date of May 2008. A parking lot for the new facility will be constructed on the demolished site and should be completed in July of this year.
The new building will have 92,000 square feet of space. State-of-the-art diagnostic equipment as well as university hospital-caliber equipment will be installed including a complete filmless environment which has the ability to store all radiology images on CD. There will also be a comprehensive women’s center designed towards women’s comfort and medical needs. Digital mammography, dexascan services (measurement of bone density), and ultrasound are some of the procedures offered to women.
Physical Therapy services have been expanded to include occupational and hand therapy. With the larger space, more types of therapy treatments will be implemented, including treatment for women’s health issues. There will also be expanded lab services on the premises, an optical boutique, as well as additional retail shops.

DuPage Medical Group’s Medical Director and Endocrinologist, Dr. Grant Sievertsen, responds to the recent National Institutes of Health Notification
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Leave a Comment
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently announced that they stopped treatment in one arm of The Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD) study. The purpose of the study was to determine whether intensively lowering blood sugar would reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, or death from cardiovascular disease, specifically in people with type 2 diabetes. Prior studies suggested that reducing blood sugar to levels found in non-diabetic adults may reduce the rate of cardiovascular diseases among those with diabetes. The NIH stopped treatment when it found those adults at especially high risk for heart attack and stroke had an increased risk of death when intensively lowering their blood glucose (sugar) below current recommendations when compared to adults in the study with a less-intensive standard treatment strategy. These results do not apply to patients with type 1 (juvenile) diabetes.
Dr. Sievertsen noted that, “the reason for an increased incidence of heart disease in this more aggressively treated group is unclear, but may be related to hypoglycemia.” However he stressed that patients should always discuss treatment options with their personal physician. “Your own doctor understands your individual health history and can best advise you. In most cases we feel that patients on standard treatment for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus can often continue without change. The study did not show that this group experienced any serious adverse events. We will continue to follow these studies and await the results of further analysis.”
Dr. Sievertsen is board certified in Internal Medicine and specializes in Endocrinology and Diabetes Care. His office is located at 908 N. Elm Street in Hinsdale, 630.323.3540.

Physicians Endorse Vaccinating Children
Filed Under Physician & Health Articles, DuPage Medical Group News | Leave a Comment
There have been a number of high profile discussions recently about a possible link between childhood vaccinations and higher incidences of certain diseases such as autism. The physicians of DuPage Medical Group would like to address the facts surrounding this critical public health issue. We feel strongly that vaccinating your child is one of the most important things a parent can do for their child’s health as well as the health of the entire community.
Many well substantiated studies have found no association between autism and thimerosal, the mercury based vaccine preservative at the center of the most recent vaccine safety concern. Moreover, a recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine found no association between thimerosal and 42 additional neuropsychological disorders. Finally, despite thimerosal’s removal from the vaccine supply several years ago, there has been no improvement in these conditions, arguing strongly against any association between thimerosal and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.
As parents and physicians we understand how important your child’s health is to you. That’s why we believe it is critical for parents to get the facts about vaccines as you make this treatment decision. Your child’s physician is the best resource for immunization information; we encourage you to discuss any concerns you may have with them at your child’s next checkup. There are also many Web sites that have credible vaccine information. We have listed those links below.

Dr. Ronjon Paul Trains Surgeons Across Midwest on Latest Lumbar Fusion Procedure
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Leave a Comment
Dr. Ronjon Paul conducted an eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF) training course at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons headquarters in Rosemont, Illinois on February 2, 2008. Neuro and Spinal Surgeons were in attendance from across the Midwest to learn from Dr. Paul how the XLIF procedure for lumbar fusion approaches the spine from the side of the body instead of from the front or back. This approach to the spine is as minimally disruptive as possible and optimizes the patients’ recovery.
Patient benefits for the XLIF procedure are:
- Reduced operative time – Traditional procedures can take up to 5 hours; the XLIF procedure can be successfully completed in as little as 45 minutes, reducing the amount of anesthesia time.
- Reduced blood loss and minimal scarring – Less-invasive procedure allows for less tissue disruption, resulting in reduced blood loss.
- Reduced postoperative pain – The XLIF procedure does not require entry through sensitive back muscles, bones, or ligaments. Many patients are usually walking the same day after surgery.
- Reduced hospital stay – Patients are typically walking the same day after surgery and require only an overnight stay in the hospital, compared to several days of immobility and hospitalization typical of traditional open approaches.
- Rapid return to normal activity – Patients are usually walking the same day after surgery. Recovery is typically around 6 weeks, compared to 6 months or more.
An accomplished XLIF surgeon and an active Society of Lateral Access member, Dr. Paul is the most experienced XLIF physician with the highest volume in the Chicagoland area. He is one of the few physicians hand selected to train in Brazil under the pioneer of the XLIF procedure. Dr. Paul is a proctor for the XLIF classes on the west coast and he also proctored several local training courses for physicians in his peer group. He routinely has surgeons visit his Operating Room to observe the XLIF procedures. Dr. Ronjon Paul practices at The Spine Center of DuPage Medical Group, located at the Edward Medical Physician Center 120 Spalding Drive Naperville, IL, 630 469 9200.
