Now Is the Time to Schedule School, Sports, and Camp Physicals
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Leave a Comment
It’s a great time to schedule school grade physicals, annual sports, and camp physicals. School-aged children are required to have a physical for those entering Kindergarten, 6th Grade, and 9th Grade. The General Assembly passed a bill that changed a portion of the student’s health exam requirement. Sixth Grade Physical exams are now required. The 6th Grade Physical replaces the 5th Grade physical requirement. Read more about the 6th Grade Physical Exam Requirement at the Illinois Association of School Administrators website.

The spring allergy season is upon us. Common springtime allergy symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, nasal drip, and itchy, watery eyes. Worsening asthma and sinus infections are common complications of inadequately managed allergies. In addition to asthma exacerbations and sinusitis, children may experience behavioral problems and ear infections as a result.
If you or your child are among the 35 million Americans affected by seasonal allergies, an allergist/immunologist can help. Allergists take a proactive stance on managing allergies – aiming to maintain symptom control and prevent complications rather than reacting when allergies flare. Through identification of allergic triggers, proper education, and appropriate medical management, an allergist can help prevent annoying allergy symptoms and minimize complications. Some options for the treatment of allergies include avoidance measures, medications, and allergen immunotherapy (”allergy shots”). Please see one of our physicians at Asthma & Allergy to find out which treatment is right for you. DuPage Medical Group has four locations to care for you. To schedule an appointment, please call 630 545 7833.

Turnoff Screens Week Begins Today, April 21, 2008!
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Leave a Comment
Children ages 8 to 18 spend more than six hours watching television, playing video games, or using the computer for recreational purposes. The more time youth spend in front of the screen, the more likely they are to be overweight. Turnoff Week, April 21 - 27, is an excellent time to start limiting recreational screen time and boosting physical activity and healthier living.
“Kids are spending more time sitting in front of screens every day than they do anything else except perhaps sleeping,” said Acting U. S. Surgeon General Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson, M.D., M.P.H. “For Turnoff Week, we are asking parents to turn off the screens and get active with their kids.”
This can be as simple as turning off Saturday morning cartoons and taking your child roller-blading, to the zoo, or walking around the neighborhood. Consider hand washing the car instead of going through an automatic car wash. Biking together as a family is an excellent activity that burns calories and boosts energy. If your child does watch television, have a contest during a commercial break to see how many push-ups or jumping jacks can be done by each family member.
Healthier choices include watching food portion size. Food portions in restaurants and at home are bigger than they used to be. Instead of a large, order a medium pizza. Each person gets the same number of slices as before, but they are smaller. Cutting back on portion size is a surefire way to help keep energy in balance.

Ask your family doctor, pediatrician, or internist about calculating your and your child’s body mass index (BMI). This is a ratio of weight to height. For adults, a normal weight is defined as an appropriate weight in relation to height. Click here for more infomation on DuPage Medical Group’s physicians.
