Asthma Control During Pregnancy
Filed Under Physician & Health Articles | Comments Off
Maintaining asthma control during pregnancy is important for the health and well-being of both mother and baby. While it is normal to have concerns about using medications during pregnancy, it is generally considered safer for pregnant women to be treated with approved asthma medications than to risk asthma flares.
Asthma increases the risk of complications during pregnancy and well-controlled asthma is associated with decreased risks. Poorly controlled asthma may place the developing fetus at risk, thus more frequent monitoring and therapy adjustments may be required. Thirty-five percent of women experience worsening asthma symptoms during pregnancy – most of these women experience increased symptoms during the late second and early third trimesters. Approximately 30% of asthmatic women improve during pregnancy and medications can sometimes be tapered.
The goals of asthma during pregnancy are the same as for other patients: achieve and maintain control of symptoms; maintain normal activity levels, including exercise; maintain normal or near normal lung function; prevent asthma flares; and avoid adverse effects from asthma medications.
Please see one of our physicians at Asthma & Allergy Center to find out which treatment options are right for you. DuPage Medical Group has four locations to care for you - Glen Ellyn; Lombard; Naperville; and Plainfield. To schedule an appointment, please call 630 545 7833.

Flat Feet in Children
Filed Under Physician & Health Articles | Comments Off
Children can suffer from several types of flat feet. Signs and symptoms can include: pain, tenderness or cramping in the foot, leg, or knee; difficulty with shoes; awkwardness or changes in walking; and reduced energy in physical activities.
Treatment options can include: orthotic devices to support the structure of the foot; physical therapy; corrective shoes; or surgery.
As noted in October’s Naperville Magazine, surgery can be a successful option, but only after conservative care when orthotics fails. Dr. Christina Brown, a podiatrist with DuPage Medical Group states, “When it’s indicated, kids do very well with the surgery. We always try to avoid the growth plates in children.”
As patients mature, the procedure becomes more complex because the deformities are more significant. Parents need to discuss their children’s feet with their pediatricians. Flat feet should be evaluated regardless of whether a child is experiencing pain. If it is overlooked, the child may experience problems later in life.

Dr. Christina Brown practices in Wheaton on Main Street; Glen Ellyn; and Naperville at River North. Please call 630-510-6929 to schedule an appointment.
