Cancer Prevention Tips
Filed Under Physician & Health Articles, DuPage Medical Group News | Comments Off
In recognition of National Cancer Prevention Month physicians at DuPage Medical Group (DMG) have offered these tips to patients to help prevent cancer. There are many simple lifestyle changes to reduce your risk for certain types of cancer. Generally, maintaining a healthy weight through nutritious diet and physical activity, limiting alcohol intake and not smoking will help reduce your risk. More specifically, DMG dermatologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons and gynecologists provided the following tips to prevent skin, esophageal, colon, breast, and cervical cancer:
Gastroenterology
Tips to prevent Esophageal Cancer:
- Don’t ignore your heartburn! See a gastroenterologist if you have heartburn.
- Talk to your doctor. If you develop trouble swallowing or painful swallowing or any unintentional weight loss you should let your doctor know right away.
- Find out about any history of cancer in your family. Often times diseases that siblings or parents have can significantly increase your risk for many gastrointestinal cancers.
- Don’t smoke. Also, limit barbeque and grilling with charcoal.
Tips to prevent Colon Cancer:
- Maintain a healthy weight. Obesity is a risk factor for colon cancer.
- Take your vitamins! Fiber, vitamin D, selenium, and folic acid should all be part of your balanced diet.
- Talk to your doctor. Tell them about any abnormal or unintentional weight loss. Tell them about any rectal bleeding or changes in bowel habits.
- Get screened. Early and timely screening can markedly decrease the incidence of colon cancer. You should begin getting annual colonoscopies at age 50 and earlier if there is a family history of colon cancer.
- Don’t smoke. Smoking cigarettes and other forms of tobacco use significantly increases the risk of developing colon cancer.
Did you know that colon cancer kills nearly twice as many Americans every year as Breast Cancer? It’s the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. However, the good news is that colon cancer is the most common preventable form of cancer.

Dermatology
Tips to Prevent Skin Cancer:
- Check your sunscreen. Make sure it blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Find a moisturizer that has sunscreen in it and wear every day.
- Get to know your skin. Perform monthly self skin exams so that you can become very familiar with your own skin and be more likely to notice new or changing spots.
- See a Dermatologist. Make an appointment to get a baseline assessment of your skin and learn what to look for. This will ensure that you have a “go-to” person when you have questions in the future.

Tips to Prevent Cancer in Women:
- Get screened. See your doctor for an annual pap smear, breast exam and mammogram (at appropriate age).
- Practice safe sex. Condom usage is helpful in preventing the transmission of HPV, a leading cause of cervical cancer. Also, some women should consider getting the HPV vaccine.
- Talk to your family. Awareness of family history of uterine, ovarian, breast and colon cancer will ensure proper screening begins at the appropriate age.
- Breast cancer prevention. Simple lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, limiting alcohol, consuming a high fiber diet, and avoiding long term hormone replacement therapy may reduce the risk of breast cancer. For high risk women, chemo-prevention medication is an option as well as some surgical options for those women that are known genetic mutation carriers.
