Botox - More Than Just for Wrinkles
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Comments Off
DuPage Medical Group physicians, Dr. Jeffrey Hsu, Board Certified Dermatologist; Dr. Andrew Celmer, Board Certified Otolarynologist; and Dr. Alan Summers, Board Certified Clinical Neurologist all utilize Botox for various treatments in their departments. Naperville Magazine spoke to these physicians for their “Botox Bonuses” article by Barbara C. Neff. Click here to read the entire November 2009 aritcle.
While Botox is commonly associated with helping to temporarily eleminate wrinkles of the forehead, the drug’s manufacturer states that therapeutic sales accounted for about half of all Botox sales in 2008. A purified form of botulinum toxin that prevents muscles from contracting, Botox blocks the connection between the nerves and neurotransmitters so the muscles don’t work as well. Dr. Jeffrey Hsu uses Botox himself, to counter excessive sweating. “I personally advocate Botox because it’s made such a big difference in my life. As a surgeon, I couldn’t even work if my hands were sweating,” says Dr. Hsu.
Dr. Andrew Celmer has used Botox for vocal cord problems such as spasmodic dystonia. “There is no cure, ” Celmer says, “but you can stop the contractions for three to six months by injecting Botox into the muscles adjacent to the vocal cords. It relaxes the muscles, so patients can have fluent speech again.”
Neurologists started using it in the late 80’s. “We’ve gone from virtually no treatment to an excellent cure in some cases,” states Dr. Alan Summers. Botox has also been used to relieve migraines although it is yet undetermined how Botox alleviates migraines and it doesn’t work for all migraine sufferers.
