Acne Secrets for Healthy Skin by Dana Roman, L.E. at The Dermatology Institute of DuPage Medical Group in Hinsdale

Remember being a teenager and feeling mortified over a little blemish that only you could see? There are so many options available to you, or your teenager, to fight against breakouts and to keep everyone guessing, “what’s their secret”?
Over the counter products are not potent enough to help everyone with the occasional breakout or acne. There are quick and simple ways that your skin care professional can help keep your acne under control. The term “chemical peel” isn’t appealing to everyone, but it is actually a very simple procedure. Depositing a high dose of salicylic acid into your skin for just a few minutes can really help clear up your acne. A series of peels may be recommended, depending on how severe your acne is. Even if you just want to avoid the premenstrual breakout or “stress pimple”, a chemical peel would be a deep cleansing treatment to guarantee clearer skin.
Microdermabrasion is another procedure that keeps your skin looking and feeling beautiful. If you have a lot of clogged pores, uneven pigment, or acne scarring, this treatment will leave your skin brilliant and silky smooth. Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation procedure that provides deep exfoliation, cleans out your pores, and stimulates your collagen and elastin, promoting regrowth for a fuller, firmer appearance. Like any exfoliating treatment, your skin will be more sensitive to the sun, so keep your skin protected with an SPF of 30 or higher at all times.
Maintenance is key to keep your results lasting. Talk with your skin care professional for the right recommendations that will compliment your skin. Remember even oily, acne prone skin needs to cleanse and moisturize twice daily, that’s right moisturize! There are oil free moisturizers that can help heal and hydrate your skin at the same time. By having these procedures done and using the proper acne and anti-aging products at home, you will know the secret to healthy skin!

DuPage Medical Group Hosts Defense Education Forum with Reserve Officers Association
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Comments Off
DuPage Medical Group (DMG) recently hosted the Defense Education Forum with the Reserve Officers Association. The purpose of this forum was to increase awareness in the medical and mental health community of existing behavioral health services, support, and assistance available to Reserve Component and Guard Service members and their families.
The U.S. Department of Defense is currently conducting an outreach effort to better educate medical and mental health providers about the unique needs of our veterans. Topics covered during the forum included: understanding the veterans experiences, identifying disorders - specifically Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This forum also provided an opportunity to identify gaps in service for Reserve, Guard, and families in Illinois.
Forum Participants included: Major General Robert Kasulke, Commanding General Army Reserve Medical Command, Colonel Nicole Keesee, Deputy Surgeon for Behavior Health, Robert Feidler, Director Defense Strategic Education of the US Reserve Officers Association, Dr. Brian O’Leary, Internist and Vice President DMG and Col. Janet M. Kamer, Ph.D., DMG Director of Psychology and Command Consultant for Psychology, Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command.
“Many non-military organizations are providing psycho-educational and therapeutic support to Reserve and Guard Service members and their families. It is critically important that these providers understand the needs of our veterans. The forum provided an excellent opportunity to not only educate participants but also engage in a discussion about how to fill possible gaps in service in Illinois,” said Colonel Kamer.
DMG will host a similar all-day event this spring at our corporate office located in Downers Grove, IL on April 9, 2010.

DuPage Medical Group (DMG) physician Dr. Kenneth Sanders received the Darrell J. Stremler Leadership Award for his work as Department Chairman in Orthopaedics. He received the award at the DMG physician holiday dinner on December 12th.
DMG began this award tradition four years ago to honor the memory of Darrell Stremler, founding CEO of DuPage Medical Group. The award has become an annual event that is given to the person, DMG practice, department or external group that best embodies the qualities of leadership that made Mr. Stremler such an outstanding CEO, community leader and person. In the award’s four year history DMG has honored community leaders and DMG physicians.
DMG honored Dr. Sanders for his service to DMG and his leadership in the healthcare community. “This year we are honoring someone who has demonstrated his ability to lead a department to make positive change, adding additional physicians and orthopedic subspecialties to better meet the needs of our patients. We appreciate Ken’s significant contributions to the Orthopaedic department and to the overall group’s success,” commented Ed Carne, CEO of DuPage Medical Group.

Dr. Mark Fisher Discusses Prostate Cancer
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Comments Off
General David H. Petraeus, the commander of American military forces in the Middle East, received a diagnosis of early-stage prostate cancer in February and has undergone radiation treatment according to recent media reports. General Petraeus, 56, is another high profile American to disclose his diagnosis of prostate cancer and undergo therapy for this disease. This year it is estimated that 192,280 men will be diagnosed with and 27,360 men will die from prostate cancer.
According to news reports the General’s cancer was detected at an early stage likely through prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening. Early detection of prostate cancer usually allows the patient to choose from several different curative treatment modalities. In remarks released by his office, “Surgery to remove the prostate was not an option due to plates/screws that were used to repair my pelvis after it was fractured in a parachuting accident.” The General underwent two months of radiation therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and is continuing his military and professional duties.
DuPage Medical Group’s Department of Urology offers prostate cancer screening, prostate biopsy for detection, and all available treatment options for prostate cancer. There are three main options for men diagnosed with prostate cancer: surgical extirpation, radiation, or active surveillance. Our Urology Department offers both robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery and traditional open surgery. For patients who will be best treated with radiation therapy our Urology Department helps coordinate treatment by a radiation oncologist and closely monitors PSA responses to treatment. For appropriately selected patients, active surveillance with monitoring of PSA and planned repeat prostate biopsy is also offered.
DMG’s Urology Department encourages all men over the age of 40 to be screened for prostate cancer. We have four locations to serve you – Bloomingdale – Lombard – Naperville – Winfield. To schedule an appointment, please call 630-790-1221. Click here to learn more about Dr. Mark Fisher.

Say Good-bye to the Unwanted Hairs by Sandi Dan, L.E. at Belleza Skin Care Institute of DuPage Medical Group
Filed Under DuPage Medical Group News | Comments Off
Have you imagined how nice it would be to not to shave or wax anymore? If so, laser hair removal is for you. It’s quick, convenient, and effective. In as little as a few treatments, you can remove the majority of unwanted hairs. Why not take advantage of this simple and safe aesthetic procedure?
Here is how it works. An average of 6-8 treatments, every 4-6 weeks is recommended for the best outcome. These treatments will remove the majority of the hair for most people, with some patients needing maintenance treatments every 4-6 months. From treatment to treatment, you will shave less often as the hair growth diminishes more and more with each session, until the vast majority is gone.
Perfect candidates for laser hair removal are people with white skin and dark hair - the darker the better. It also works well on darker skin complexions. and even on brown hairs, as long as they’re not too light in color. Unfortunately blonde or grey hairs do not work well with laser hair removal, due to the pigment of the hair.
Laser hair removal treatments at Belleza Skin Care Institute begin with a consultation with one of our medically trained aestheticians and Dr. James Herrmann. During this initial consultation, the aesthetician will perform a test patch to the treatment areas. After your consultation, you can begin treatments the following week.
So, start now in winter if you wish to be ready for next Spring. Plan ahead, you will be happy in the end.
