Dr. Charles Ahn’s Successful Mission Trip to Ebeye

DuPage Medical Group’s Charles Ahn, M.D.was part of a seven member ophthalmology team that journeyed to the tiny Pacific island of Ebeye for a two-week mission in January 2010. Dr. Ahn and the team performed 192 cataract surgeries and screened close to 400 patients.
The trip was organized by Canvasback Missions, a non-profit organization located in Benicia, California. In addition to Dr. Ahn’s ophthalmology team, services in orthopedics, dentistry, and cardiology were provided to the people of Ebeye.
The number of surgeries performed exceeded the expectations and extra supplies had to be shipped in. Patients waited to see the specialists – some had to be led into the clinic since they were totally blind from cataracts. Most of those patients were able to walk away by themselves the very next day.
Dr. Ahn said, “We are so blessed and privileged in this country and I felt that it is our responsibility to use the skills and resources that we have to provide relief and assistance to those that are suffering . . . The patients didn’t have much and were so grateful for the care they received. It was truly a privilege to be able to provide the care that we did for the people of Ebeye.”

Access DuPage - a collaborative effort to provide access to medical services to those in DuPage Country, Illinois

Access DuPage was established in 2001 and began providing health care to qualified DuPage County, IL residents in February 2002. By bringing together hospitals, physicians, government and human services agencies, Access DuPage provides health care for the country’s rising number of low-income, medically-insured residents. Last year, over 13,000 DuPage County residents were served.
Access DuPage is a collaborative effort whose mission is to provide access to medical services to those people in DuPage County, IL who lack health care access because of economic reasons. Access DuPage is not an insurance program and it is not a substitute for good health insurance. However, if you are without health care and meet the eligibility criteria, Access DuPage will try to provide you with a medical home where you can receive primary care services at a small cost until you become insured.
A person is eligible for Access DuPage if he or she:
- has resided in DuPage County for at least 30 days
- is under age 65
- has a household income below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level
- has no medical insurance
- is not eligible for private or public health coverage programs
Typically, qualified applicants are enrolled in the program for a period of one year. After one year, their eligibility must be re-verified when they re-apply for membership.

West Suburban Living Magazine Features Dr. Jack Casini, Orthopaedic Specialist with DuPage Medical Group

Orthopaedic Specialist, Dr. Jack Casini, was quoted in West Suburban Living’s March/April issue. In the article titled, “Oh My Aching Back,” it states that up to 90 percent of all adults will experience some back pain in their lifetimes. The wearing down of discs between the vertebrae is an adult degenerative disease. As the discs deteriorate, they become less effective at cushioning the spine and often cause pain.
Proactive tips for avoiding back pain, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and surgery are discussed in this article. As Dr. Casini points out, “We’re seeing advances in surgical treatment.
