Asthma and PregnancyMaintaining asthma control during pregnancy is important for the health and well-being of both mother and baby. While it is normal to have concerns about using medications during pregnancy, it is generally considered safer for pregnant women to be treated with approved asthma medications than to risk asthma flares.

Asthma increases the risk of complications during pregnancy and well-controlled asthma is associated with decreased risks. Poorly controlled asthma may place the developing fetus at risk, thus more frequent monitoring and therapy adjustments may be required. Thirty-five percent of women experience worsening asthma symptoms during pregnancy – most of these women experience increased symptoms during the late second and early third trimesters. Approximately 30% of asthmatic women improve during pregnancy and medications can sometimes be tapered.

The goals of asthma during pregnancy are the same as for other patients: achieve and maintain control of symptoms; maintain normal activity levels, including exercise; maintain normal or near normal lung function; prevent asthma flares; and avoid adverse effects from asthma medications.
