DuPage Medical Group’s Charles Ahn, M.D.was part of a seven member ophthalmology team that journeyed to the tiny Pacific island of Ebeye for a two-week mission in January 2010. Dr. Ahn and the team performed 192 cataract surgeries and screened close to 400 patients.
The trip was organized by Canvasback Missions, a non-profit organization located in Benicia, California. In addition to Dr. Ahn’s ophthalmology team, services in orthopedics, dentistry, and cardiology were provided to the people of Ebeye.
The number of surgeries performed exceeded the expectations and extra supplies had to be shipped in. Patients waited to see the specialists – some had to be led into the clinic since they were totally blind from cataracts. Most of those patients were able to walk away by themselves the very next day.
Dr. Ahn said, “We are so blessed and privileged in this country and I felt that it is our responsibility to use the skills and resources that we have to provide relief and assistance to those that are suffering . . . The patients didn’t have much and were so grateful for the care they received. It was truly a privilege to be able to provide the care that we did for the people of Ebeye.”
