Bone Density

Please do not wear any metal in or around the waist area.  No restrictions on food or drink. DO NOT schedule studies with oral or IV contrast before the scan.

CAT Scan (CT/CTA)

*** For CT, PET/CT or MRI tests there may be paperwork or a contrast to drink. You may need to arrive earlier than your scan time.  When scheduling your test the scheduler will inform you of the time you need to arrive and time of your actual test.  It is very important to arrive at the arrival time so your test can start on time. ***

CT SCAN OF THE ABDOMEN AND PELVIS WITH IV AND ORAL CONTRAST

Blood work Required (BUN/Creatinine Serum) within 30 days of test - anyone diabetic, 65 or older or have kidney problems

Do not eat solid foods 4 hours prior to exam. Liquids are allowed and encouraged. Patients will drink a barium contrast (a liquid that shows the intestines) one hour prior to the appointment and will be given an IV contrast during the exam.

For diabetic patients taking Glucophage, Glucovance or Metformin drugs, you must stop taking this medication the day of your test and 48 hours after the exam. 

Also, if you are age 65 or older, or have a known severe allergy, you must contact Dupage Medical Group at 630-545-7880 for instructions before you begin this preparation.

CT SCAN OF THE ABDOMEN AND PELVIS WITH ORAL CONTRAST ONLY

Nothing to eat 4 hours prior to the exam, liquids are allowed and encouraged.   Patients will drink a barium contrast one hour prior to the test in our office.

CT SCAN WITH IV CONTRAST ONLY
Blood work Required (BUN/Creatinine Serum) within 30 days of test – anyone diabetic, 65 or older or have kidney problems

Fluoroscopy

IVP

Blood work Required (BUN/Creatinine Serum) within 30 days of test - anyone diabetic, 65 or older or have kidney problems

You must pick up a Lo SO Prep kit from DuPage Medical Group in Glen Ellyn or arrange with the scheduler to have it sent to a closer facility to pick up at least 3 – 4 days prior to the test.  Follow the instructions given on the inserted handout.  Disregard preparation on kit itself.

For diabetic patients taking Glucophage, Glucovance or Metformin drugs, you must stop taking this medication the day of your test and 48 hours after the exam. 
Also, if you are age 65 or older, or have a known severe allergy, you must contact Dupage Medical Group at 630-545-7880 for instructions before you begin this preparation.

UGI/ UGI Double Contrast/ Esophagus

  • Eat your evening meal the night before test by 7pm.
  • From 7pm – midnight you may drink water ONLY.  NO FOOD.
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  • Drink plenty of water after exam.
  • A mild laxative may be helpful if you become constipated after 48 hrs.

UGI w/small bowel/ Small Bowel
**Please allow 2 – 5 hours in our office the day of test.  You may want to bring some reading material.

  • Eat your evening meal the night before test by 7pm.
  • From 7pm – midnight you may drink water ONLY.  NO FOOD.
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  • Drink plenty of water after exam.
  • A mild laxative may be helpful if you become constipated after 48 hrs.

LGI/ Barium enema/ Pneumocolon
You must pick up Lo SO Prep kit from DuPage Medical Group in Glen Ellyn or arrange with the scheduler to have it sent to a closer facility for pick up at least 3 – 4 days prior to the test.  Follow the instructions on the inside cover of the prep kit.
After the exam a warm water enema is recommended to eliminate residual barium in system.

Arthrogram of shoulder

No Preparation.
MRI of shoulder to follow usually.

Cystogram/ Voiding cystogram

No Preparation.

Tomogram/ Loop-o-gram/ Sinus tract study/ T-tube

No Preparation.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI/MRA)

*** For CT, PET/CT or MRI tests there may be paperwork or a contrast to drink. You may need to arrive earlier than your scan time.  When scheduling your test the scheduler will inform you of the time you need to arrive and time of your actual test.  It is very important to arrive at the arrival time so your test can start on time.  ***

You may bring music on a CD to listen to while you are having your MRI. (Exam dependant)
Wear loose comfortable clothing/ no metal.  All metal items must be removed prior to the exam. Gowns and scrub pants can be provided if needed.

Patients with metallic implants, pacemakers, stents or metal clips must notify the office prior to examination.
Claustrophobic patient’s, who have been prescribed anti-anxiety medication, please follow your physician’s instructions.

MRI WITHOUT CONTRAST
NO preparation required.


MRI WITH IV CONTRAST
Blood work Required (BUN/Creatinine Serum) within 30 days of test – anyone diabetic, 65 or older or have kidney problems
Stay well hydrated.

If you have an allergy to the IV contrast, please let us know at DuPage Medical Group at 630-545-7880.  You may be required to be pre-medicated by your Doctor before the test.

MRCP MRI/ Abdominal
Blood work Required (BUN/Creatinine Serum) within 30 days of test – anyone diabetic, 65 or older or have kidney problems
No eating 4 hours prior to the examination.  It is OK to drink liquids.  We want you to stay well hydrated.

Mammography/Ductograms

On the day of your exam please do not apply any lotions, body sprays, powders or underarm deodorant from the waist to the neck. If you must use powder or deodorant, please let us know before the exam so that we may provide you with wipes to remove it.

Please wear a two piece outfit that is easy to change out of.  If you have had a mammogram outside of Dupage Medical Group, you must bring them with you or have them sent to us prior to your test.  These are used for comparison purposes.

PET Scan

*** For CT, PET/CT or MRI tests there may be paperwork or a contrast to drink. You may need to arrive earlier than your scan time.  When scheduling your test the scheduler will inform you of the time you need to arrive and time of your actual test.  It is very important to arrive at the arrival time so your test can start on time. ***

Please bring a copy of any CTs, MRIs or PET and or PET/CT scans done at a facility other than DuPage Medical Group on a CD to give to the radiologist for comparison with your PET/CT study.

Nothing to eat or drink (except water & medication) 6 hours before scheduled appointment time.  This also includes gum and breath mints.

All patients having a PET/CT are asked to eat a high protein/low carbohydrate diet, avoiding sweets, breads, pasta, rice, potatoes and cereals the day before the scheduled appointment time.

Oral medications can be taken as prescribed with water if tolerated on an empty stomach.

  • Patients may take pain medications as needed unless otherwise instructed.
  • Claustrophobic patients are asked to bring their anti-anxiety medication with them and will be instructed when to take it once they arrive for their scheduled appointment.

Diabetic Patients: Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to the exam.  It is important for your blood sugar levels to be low (below 200mg/dl).  At the time you schedule your appointment, please inform us if you are diabetic so we can provide special instructions.

Patients should severely limit activity for 24 hours prior to scheduled appointment time. 

  • Limit talking on the phone
  • Gum chewing
  • Exercising
  • Physical Therapy

Patients are asked to wear warm, comfortable clothing.

  • No jewelry
  • No metal
  • No underwire bra if possible

It is essential patients arrive on time for their scheduled appointment.  The material used for the study is extremely time sensitive and ordered specifically for each individual patient for the time they are scheduled and can not be used after that time frame has passed.  This may result in rescheduling your exam for another day.

Plan on being at the facility for at least 2 ½ hours.

Ultrasound

Breast, Carotid, extremities, Groin, Infant head, Infant spine, Infant hips, Prostate, Renal, Thyroid, Scrotal, Venous (DVT only): No preparation is required.

Aorta, Complete Abdomen, Gallbladder, Liver, Pancreas, and Spleen: Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the test.
Bladder, OB, Pelvis, Ultrasound: Drink and finish 32 oz of water 1 hour prior to exam. Do not urinate. (A full bladder is needed for these exams.)
