Hearing Disorders

Hearing disorders fall into two different categories: permanent and non-permanent. Permanent hearing damage occurs when the inner ear nerve is damaged. Types of non-permanent hearing disorders occur when sound waves cannot reach the inner ear because of ear-wax blockage, an excess of fluid, or a punctured ear drum. Ear problems are caused by hereditary, trauma, a poor reaction to medication, hearing or continual exposure to loud noises.

The Cochlear Corp BAHA and Oticon Medical Ponto are surgically implanted treatment options for single sided deafness (SSD). Like TransEar, the BAHA and Ponto functions through direct transfer of sound through bone vibration from the “non-hearing” ear to the better hearing ear.
