5 Ways to Use a Video Visit
Using technology as part of your healthcare team
In so many areas of our lives, technology has been a benefit and convenience, allowing us to dedicate more time to the activities and people we care about most. When it comes to our healthcare, leveraging technology should be no different. With video visits, it is easy to prioritize your health and receive quality, convenient healthcare when and where you need it.
Designed to be no different than scheduling an in-person appointment, video visits help you live a healthier, happier life. Here are a few ways to simplify your care with video visits.
1. Get care on your time
With families, jobs, school and other daily responsibilities, our hectic lives don’t always make time for non-urgent medical concerns such as allergies, flu symptoms or rashes. Video visits allow you to have a face-to-face conversation with a board-certified physician or nurse practitioner from your home, office, or car; anywhere with a data or WiFi connection.
Video visits are conducted through the MyChart app, which is accessible on most mobile devices or your desktop computer. Whether you have a break during nap time or a scheduled few minutes between meetings, video visits allow you to consult with a physician without interrupting your entire day.
2. Refill your prescription
Running low on your regular prescription from your primary care provider? You can schedule a same-day video visit to consult with one of our primary care physicians, who have access to your complete DMG medical records, and request a refill before your medications run out.
Some prescriptions, including controlled substances, require an in-person appointment. Check with your primary care provider when prescribed medication to confirm that a refill can be requested through a video visit.
3. Create a travel health plan
If you are heading abroad, it's important to understand your destination's health recommendations before you go. During a video visit, one of our physicians or nurse practitioners can help you develop a travel health plan that covers vaccine recommendations, prevention tips for common traveling ailments and how to manage current health conditions while you travel.
When planning an international trip, we recommend scheduling a consult with our Travel Medicine Clinic three to six months prior to your trip to allow time to receive all recommended vaccinations and to ensure such vaccinations have enough time to be fully effective.
4. Find support and make a plan
It is so easy to say "I will quit smoking tomorrow, I'm just too busy to think about it today", or "I will make healthier food choices tomorrow, I am just too stressed to think about it today." However, with a video visit, it is easy to set a smoking cessation plan with a board-certified physician or to partner with a registered dietitian to evaluate and even modify your current diet.
Whether it's in a single visit or through weekly "check-ins," video visits can help you build a healthcare team, remove barriers to information and access and support your healthy choices.
5. Complete a pre-operative assessment
Often, surgical procedures require an assessment by a healthcare professional or a pre-operative clearance prior to treatment. For certain eligible procedures, such screening colonoscopies, video visits can help you prepare for an upcoming procedure without adding a trip to your physician’s office. You can complete a pre-op assessment with a member of your care team to review your medical history and current medications, receive pre-treatment instructions, and address any questions you may have about your procedure and recovery period.
When scheduling your procedure, ask if you qualify to have your pre-operative assessment done via video visit.
We use technology to enhance almost every aspect of our lives, so why not our healthcare, too? Staffed by board-certified physicians and nurse practitioners, video visits make high quality healthcare accessible right at your fingertips.
