What Every Woman Should Know About Family History

Recently there has been a lot of hype surrounding certain celebrities and the proactive health decisions they are making like double mastectomies and oophoroectomy. But what does this mean? Researchers have learned that if there are early, multiple or rare breast or ovarian cancer in the family, you may be at increased cancer risk.

In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, those with the hereditary breast cancer gene (BRCA1 mutation), have a 55-65% chance of developing breast cancer by age 70. Those with BRCA2, another common breast cancer gene, have about a 45% chance, compared to the general population who have about an 8% chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.
