A Child's Guide to School Physicals
A story tool to help your child understand what to expect at a school or sports physical.
While we’re still enjoying the long summer days, back-to-school and fall sports season is quickly approaching. This slower time of year is a convenient time to put your entire family’s healthcare on the calendar. Before the school year, we highly encourage (some school districts and sports teams require) all children, from preschool through high school, receive an annual physical. This appointment tracks the important developmental changes happening in their lives and builds a medical history for later in childhood and through puberty.
Working as a family medicine physician for 14 years, I completely understand how a well-child visit with a doctor can be a nerve-wracking experience for the newest students and athletes. I put together this letter as a tool to share with your child to better understand what they will most commonly experience at their annual well-visit. Address this letter to your child from one of their friends or from our friend, Liam, and read it to them a day or two before their visit so the excitement is fresh in their mind.
The best part of our job as physicians is to see your amazing kids grow through the years and help them mature into healthy young adults. I am really looking forward to partnering with you to make this your child’s best school year yet!
We are available Monday through Saturday in both Family Medicine and Pediatrics or on Saturday and Sunday in Pediatric After-Hours Care for comprehensive school and sports exams, making it simple to plan your child’s care around your schedule. To schedule an appointment, call 888-MY-DMG-DR or schedule online.
