How much sleep does my child need?

By Dr. Michael Boettcher

Every living creature needs to sleep. Sleep is especially important for children as it directly impacts mental and physical development and promotes alertness, memory and performance. Children who have developed good sleep habits are more likely to function better and are less prone to behavioral problems and moodiness. This makes sleep an issue that often troubles parents from the newborn period through adolescence and beyond. Children can develop good sleep habits and can overcome common sleep problems, but like everything else for your child, requires parents to develop consistency and persistency in the sleep routine.
