Is It The Baby Blues or Something More Severe?

Having a baby can bring on many different emotions ranging from joy to anxiety to sadness. In some cases depression may occur. How do you know if it’s just the baby blues or something more serious like postpartum depression? Below are some facts to help you differentiate between the two.

Baby Blues (these symptoms can last anywhere from a day to two weeks)
• Feelings of sadness, anxiety and irritability
• Mood swings
• Trouble sleeping
• Crying
• Decreased concentration

Postpartum Depression (symptoms will be similar to the baby blues but will be more intense and last longer)
• Feelings of guilt or shame
• Severe mood swings
• Insomnia
• Extreme irritability
• Withdrawal from family and friends
• Lack of happiness in life
• Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby
