Common Neurological Problems & Diagnoses

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Guillain Barre Syndrome
  • Ataxia
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Polyneuropathies
  • Progressive neurological conditions
  • Spasticity tone

Neurological physical therapists work with patients to decrease pain, improve the person's balance and coordination, and help to restore their range of movement and motion. Without physical therapy following a neurological injury, patients may lose many functions and not be able to perform certain activities. For many neurological disorders or injuries there is a window of time in which uninjured cells in the brain and spinal cord can learn to control the missing functions. Physical therapists are very knowledgeable about human movement and can teach patients how to improve their functional movement in order to help restore independence.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, speak with your physician about whether you might benefit from physical therapy:

  • Muscular weakness
  • Spasticity
  • Difficulty walking
  • Difficulty getting in and out of chairs or bed
  • Falls or loss of balance
  • Poor coordination
  • Loss of range of motion
