5 Frequently Asked Questions About Vasectomy

By Amit Patel, MD

If you and your spouse/partner feel your family and complete and looking for options, below are some common questions and answers regarding the vasectomy procedure.

What is a vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a male sterilization procedure. It is performed with a percutaneous, or no-scalpel approach, using a local anesthetic with no incision on the skin. Many men do not realize that a vasectomy is less costly, less painful, and less morbid than a tubal ligation procedure for women.

How long does a vasectomy take?
It can be done in about the time of an office visit – typically about 30 minutes.

What is recovery time like for a vasectomy?
Recovery time usually consists of 2 days of rest at home following the procedure and 1 week of no strenuous activity.

Does a vasectomy procedure result in immediate sterilization?
Men should realize that a vasectomy does not provide immediate sterilization and a post-vasectomy semen analysis should be done four months after the procedure to confirm sterility.

Is sexual function impacted by having a vasectomy?
Vasectomy does not affect the volume of ejaculation, sexual function, erections, or testosterone levels in the body.
