Radiation Mark Removal Program

By DuPage Medical Group Dermatology

As part of external beam radiation therapy, you will have radiation marks, or tattoos, put on your skin. These marks are used by the radiation therapists to guide precise body positioning, critical to ensure cancer cells are being effectively targeted. The radiation marks aide in keeping you perfectly aligned throughout the course of your treatment.

Following treatment, patients will continue to follow-up with members of their cancer care team including their medical and/or radiation oncologist. If you received permanent radiation tattoos, your physician will decide if and when it’s appropriate to have them removed. Luckily, radiation marks can be removed through a simple process using laser surgery.

Recently, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Inc. (ASLMS) has developed a program called New Beginnings: Radiation Mark Removal Program. This is a national, philanthropic campaign aimed at removing radiation treatment marks free of charge to cancer patients.

DuPage Medical Group has three board-certified dermatologists, who among only 100 other board-certified ASLMS members across the United States, provide this service.

This service is available for both DMG and non-DMG patients who have undergone radiation therapy. To be eligible, simply visit a DMG dermatologist for a consultation and bring a letter from your radiation oncologist/oncologist with approval for the removal of the radiation marks.

To schedule a consultation, please call 630-547-5040.
