DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – DuPage Medical Group cardiologist Dr. Kenneth Weinberg is one of the nation’s first surgeons to implant the new Micra Transcatheter Pacemaker system during a procedure at Edward Hospital in Naperville, Illinois.
Developed by Medtronic, the Micra TPS received FDA approval in April. Like other pacemakers, it controls the patient’s heartbeat. However, Micra TPS is small enough to implant directly into the right ventricle chamber of the heart. The pill capsule-sized device also does not use wire leads, which significantly reduces the chance for infection, venous obstruction and other post-surgery complications with more traditional systems.
“The Micra TPS system is still relatively new, but it could be promising in our ability to treat heart patients with a pacing system with much less risk of complications,” says Dr. Weinberg, who has been practicing for more than 12 years.
FDA approval of the Micra TPS was based on a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that found 96 percent of patients experienced no system-related or procedure-related major complications at six months. The Micra was successfully implanted in 99.2 percent of more than 700 patients.
