Michael Amil, PsyD
Behavioral & Mental Health (IPD), Health Psychology
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with robust experience working in community, residential and medical settings. I work predominately from a relational model that utilizes an intersectional feminist lens to situate people’s lived experiences. People can have multiple identities and belief systems that deserve recognition. Leveraging these nuances can empower patients to utilize coping strategies and frameworks that serve to better sustain their wellbeing. Whether it is seeking out specific solutions or making meaning of an event, I strive to work collaboratively alongside patients as they walk towards healing.
Behavioral & Mental Health insurance coverage varies by provider.
Prior to scheduling with a Behavioral & Mental Health (IPD) provider, please confirm with your insurance carrier that this provider is considered in-network and covered by your insurance plan.
I have completed specialty training in health psychology, which focuses on psychosocial and adaptive functioning related to medical diagnoses, injuries, and chronic health conditions. I have completed my APA Internship and Post-doctoral Fellowship at Veteran Affairs Medical Centers working alongside integrated clinical teams. Some common presenting concerns I have addressed have included adjustment worries or shifts in mood related to traumatic brain injury, amputation, spinal cord injury, IVF/family planning, HIV, and cancer. This can also include couple’s therapy or addressing sex and intimacy concerns. I also have extensive experience working with the LGBTQ+ Community. I recognize the importance of understanding the historical, sociopolitical context to de-pathologizing sexual and gender identity differences. From coming out to navigating trans/gender expansive care, I enjoy walking alongside folks in moving towards living more authentically. I support working from an informed consent model and strongly believe in empowering people to make their own choices when considering what congruence and authenticity looks like for them.
Personal interests include queer pop culture, disability advocacy, and racial justice. I enjoy cooking, art festivals, and traveling in my free time. It is not uncommon to find me reading the latest dystopic novel or playing video games.
