Gastric Bypass

Gas­tric bypass surgery is a Bariatric (weight loss) pro­ce­dure that may be appro­pri­ate for indi­vid­u­als who have been unable to achieve or sus­tain weight loss through con­ser­v­a­tive treat­ment meth­ods, includ­ing diet and exer­cise, or who have oth­er med­ical con­di­tions that may be improved with weight loss.

Dur­ing gas­tric bypass surgery, a small stom­ach pouch approx­i­mate­ly the size of an egg is cre­at­ed to link the stom­ach and small intes­tine which allows food to bypass the rest of the stom­ach and small intes­tine dur­ing the diges­tive process. 

The pro­ce­dure typ­i­cal­ly takes between one and a half to two hours to per­form, requires a two or three night stay at the hos­pi­tal and typ­i­cal recov­ery time rang­ing from two to six weeks.

Gas­tric bypass surgery offers the fastest and great­est weight loss (on aver­age between 60 – 80 per­cent of excess body weight) and is more suc­cess­ful in treat­ing obe­si­ty-relat­ed med­ical conditions.
