Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery is a Bariatric (weight loss) procedure that may be appropriate for individuals who have been unable to achieve or sustain weight loss through conservative treatment methods, including diet and exercise, or who have other medical conditions that may be improved with weight loss.

During gastric bypass surgery, a small stomach pouch approximately the size of an egg is created to link the stomach and small intestine which allows food to bypass the rest of the stomach and small intestine during the digestive process.

The procedure typically takes between one and a half to two hours to perform, requires a two or three night stay at the hospital and typical recovery time ranging from two to six weeks.

Gastric bypass surgery offers the fastest and greatest weight loss (on average between 60-80 percent of excess body weight) and is more successful in treating obesity-related medical conditions.
