Iodine Ablation

Iodine Ablation is radiation therapy in which radioactive iodine (RAI), also known as I-131, is given to a patient to destroy (or ablate) residual healthy thyroid tissue that remains after a thyroidectomy. Generally this procedure would be performed after the patient has stopped all thyroid medications for several weeks, but are still showing residual thyroid tissue or lesions.
