- Who is a Candidate?
You may be a candidate for Weight Loss Clinic services, including bariatric surgery, if you are considered to be obese. Obesity is a chronic, neurobehavioral disease that increases your overall health risk and can have a significant impact on your quality of life. You are considered to be obese if your Body Mass Index (BMI) score is 30 or greater. Your BMI score takes into consideration your height-to-weight ratio and can be determined using the following calculation:
BMI = (Weight in pounds x 703)/(Height in inches x Height in inches)
The physicians and staff at the Weight Loss Clinic work closely with your primary care physician and other members of your care team to develop a treatment plan that meets your healthcare needs and weight loss goals.
- Building Your Treatment Plan
During your initial consultation, we will discuss your current health, lifestyle and risk factors. We’ll review your previous weight loss experiences and all current medications. To ensure we have the most complete picture of your current health, please bring any recent lab results, a list of your medications and logs including those for blood sugar, blood pressure and food.
- Treatment Options
A sustainable, effective weight loss treatment plan often includes a combination of several key components including:
- Preventative care recommendations
- Metabolic disease assessment and management
- Nutrition therapy
- Exercise planning
- Behavioral and stress management
- Ongoing health and treatment monitoring
- Medication management
- Procedure-based or surgical options
- Ongoing Coordination of Care
Once a treatment plan has been established, you will meet with one of our weight loss clinic providers monthly to monitor your vitals including any blood pressure or blood sugar logs. We will also review your diet and exercise progress and any changes in your health or medications. These monthly check-points provide an opportunity to make adjustments to your treatment plan if needed and address any roadblocks you may be experiencing with your diet and exercise program.
- When to Consider Bariatric Surgery
In some cases, despite your best efforts, surgical weight loss treatments may be recommended if you have been unable to achieve or sustain weight loss through conservative methods. You may be a candidate for bariatric surgery if you have a BMI score of 40 and above or if you have a score of 35-40 with another medical condition that may be improved following surgery.
Our team of experienced bariatric surgeons offers several weight loss procedure options including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and duodenal switch. Your bariatric surgeon will help you select the right procedure for you based on your overall health and weight loss goals.
